the novel is based on true events experienced by the author's father during the second world war. an airplane mechanic for the american army air corps, he found himself caring for horses and mults in the china burma theater (CBi), a largely forgotten military operation. he helped to guide the mules across the himalayas form india through burma to save china. the novel begins in world war ii, but encapsulates the family's participation in the other twentieth century worldwide conflict, the great war (ww i). distant cousins were members the hungarian cavalry regiment. the hungarian loss during that war, resulted in the family resettling in america. political resentments for the first world war bubbled up to the surface causing twenty years later the second world war. equines and war played significant roles in the author's family history as winners and losers in great battle operations. despite tanks and giant artillery, it was mules that saved the day. a horseman, the author's father learned to love and respect mules.
